Tug of War

Torn between speckled black and murky white,
Shades of confused grey plagues us day and night.

Past and present stuck in an eternal tug of war;
The mighty rope of Time hold them in its thrall.

White lies and dark dreams, the so-called right and wrong;
A swirling alphabet soup, far  too bitter and too strong;

Hand-cut paper hearts and subtly scented elegance;
The pestilence of mediocrity strive with intellect's arrogance.

Common sense and sensibility all smudged in their furthest edges;
Relentlessly, unbearably, the human heart and mind trudges.
